Paraty has become a popular tourist area in recent years, renowned for the beauty of the town and the magnificence of the coast and mountains in the region. The Portuguese colonial and Brazilian Imperial architecture has been perfectly preserved and the many buildings have been converted into eclectic and artsy shops and restaurants. Automobile traffic is forbidden inside the city in order to preserve the tranquil ambience. The quaint historic village is surrounded by beaches and national parks – offering tourists a panoply of activities to enjoy. Paraty has become a major international destination for Brazilian as well as international tourists seeking sunshine and spectacular beaches (including snorkeling and scuba). Paraty Calendar January 04 - 17 – Folia de Reis 20 – Carnamar - Opening of Carnival on the Sea! February 01 - 05 – Carnival - Paraty boasts a lively street carnival with "blocos" (carnival groups) and masks galore. On Saturday of carnival, the traditional "bloco da lama" (block of the Mud), parades with almost 2000 participants. 21 - 24 – Paraty Cultural 28 – Anniversary of Paraty - 339th. Anniversary of Paraty: The Secretary of Tourism promotes several events on this date in commemoration of the town's birthday. March 16 - 23 – Easter Week (Historic Center) Several processions take place during Easter Week. At midnight on Thursday the Procession of "Fogaréu" (a torch procession) takes place. 28 - 30 – Fest Juá April May 02 - 11 – Divino Espírito Santo Festival - This festival originated in the middle ages in Portugal. Presentation of typical dances, folkloric puppets, music, processions and fireworks all take place. This is one of the most popular and beautiful festivals and always attracts crowds. 22 – Corpus Christi - (Historic Center) Paraty is decorated with flowers and pieces of sacred art. The streets are decorated with "rugs" formed with leaves and colored sawdust. 26 - 28 – Dance Paraty - National dance competition. June 06 - 08 – Paraty Instrumental 07 - 15 –Paraty International Film Festival 23 - 25 – Shrimp Festival (Araújo Island) 20 - 29 – São Pedro & São Paulo Festival (Araújo Island) 29 – São Pedro & São Paulo Maritime Procession July 02 - 06 - FLIP – VI International Literature Festival of Paraty (FLIP) 06 a 08 - Encanta Trindade 13-22 Festival of Santa Rita: (Historic Center) On the day of the party, the Santa Rita Church is richly ornamented in the fashion of the XVIII century, and a solemn mass takes place followed by a procession and the presentation of Folcoric Dances August 01 - 03 – Encontro de Redatores Publicitários 06 - 24 – II Caiçara Cultural Meeting 21 - 24 – XXVI Pinga Festival of Paraty: (Historic Center) The stills that produce the pinga (sugar cane liquor) of Paraty organize the party where you can taste several varieties of pinga. Top Brazilian bands perform and the party goes late. September 08 – Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Festival 04 - 07 – Spring Festival 10 - 14 – Paraty in Focus – International Photography Event October 03 - 05 – Ideas Workshop – National Evangelical Event in Paraty 10 - 12 – Ymaguaré – Myths & Legends – Brazilian Indian Culture November 07 - 16 – N. Sra. Do Rosário & São Benedito Festival 01 - 30 – Folia Gastronômica – Gastronomic Festival 14 - 16 – Black Culture Meeting - This "carnival" brings together different centers of afro-Brazilian culture with presentations of ethnic carnival troupes. (Quilombo do Campinho) December 12 - 14 – Opening of Christmas Season 31 - New Years: At 23:30h in the 31, tourists and inhabitants go to the beach of Pontal where there is live music and a beautiful fireworks display. The party continues until dawn. Paraty Carnaval If you're looking for an alternative to the massive Rio de Janeiro Carnival, head down the coast to the old colonial town of Paraty. It is a more traditional party, is less crowded and set in a utopian environment. Like the bigger carnivals, Parati's celebrations play on fantasies, but it is more akin to the Venice Carnival in Italy or the Carnaval de Olinda in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. It includes masked blocos, or carnival groups, along with children and adults in fancy dress and effigies of famous personalities. Carnival costume allows the people to be someone or something else for a couple of days, escaping from everyday life into the world of fantasy, be it black or white, king or pauper. They often aim (harmlessly) to scare the passers-by with skulls and deformed papier machê heads. Although most of the celebrations take place in the historic district of Parati, there are plenty of other events on the local beaches, including the Bloco de Lama, which traditionally starts from the Praia do Jabaquara before continuing around the town.
